Description

This 1939 Proof Mercury Dime is a gorgeous example of one of America's most beloved coin designs. With a proof mintage of only 9,321 pieces compared to over 67 million business strikes that year, these collector-only issues are genuinely scarce survivors from the pre-war era. Adolph Weinman's iconic Liberty head with winged cap, often mistaken for the Roman god Mercury, displays crisp detail with fully defined hair curls and wing feathers against deeply mirrored proof fields. The reverse fasces with olive branch is equally sharp, showing complete horizontal bands and leaf detail. At PF66, this coin exhibits exceptional surfaces with brilliant reflectivity and minimal marks. Notably, 1939 is the only proof Mercury Dime date that occasionally shows cameo contrast, making it a favorite among collectors. A classic pre-war proof that belongs in any serious type or Mercury Dime collection.
